THE skull of a 'cousin' of the human species unearthed in South Africa could shed more light on how humans evolved, according to its finders. The two-million-year old skull belongs to an extinct species called Paranthropus robustus that's thought to have been a 'cousin species' of our direct ancestor - Homo erectus.

Three additional skulls called KNM-KP 18338, KNM-KP 30604, and KNM-KP 30619 are known from the southern Turkana Basin in the Kanapoi Formation, dating between 4.07 and 4.12 million years. KNM-ER 1682, KNM-LT 421, KNM-LT 26305, and KNM-KP 30619 were previously assigned to Rimasuchus lloydi , and their reassignment to C. thorbjarnarsoni reduces the range of R. lloydi to Northern Africa. A. boisei and robustus are two “robust” australopithecines, described as such because their skulls and teeth suggest these guys were adapted for prolonged, powerful bouts of mastication (it means chewing, get your mind out of the gutter). 2020-11-12 2012-09-12 http://bit.ly/1L7AZ0P Our WitmerLab team has been working for some time on the skull of Dinornis robustus, the extinct South Island giant moa from New Zealan 2018-11-28 A two million-year-old skull from a large-toothed distant human cousin has been unearthed at an Australian-led archaeological dig deep in a South African cave system. The discovery is the earliest known and best-preserved example of the small-brained hominin called Paranthropus robustus. In addition, DNH 7 is the most complete skull (cranium and mandible) attributed to A. robustus, coming from the site of Drimolen (Keyser, 2000;Keyser et al., 2000). Australian researchers have unearthed a two million-year-old skull in South Africa, a haul that could throw more light on human evolution.
